This Q & A session took place at the Caves in Edinburgh just before Beattie took to the stage in a support role for the Apple Beggars Christmas Party night…what a night it turned out to be! The capacity crowd loved Beattie’s set and were thrilled when he joined the Apple Beggars on stage near the end of the night for a few more songs.
A huge thank you to him for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer some more probing questions for us and we wish him the best of luck in London, I have a feeling 2015 will be his year!
On reflection, looking back on 2014 and the highs and lows , what would you say are the highlights of this year and did you experience any low points? – Highs have been progressing with my career, low’s would be drinking too much.
By this time next year , when you’re looking back over 2015 what would you like to have achieved? – I’d like to have a good batch of songs, maybe 15 – 20 really really good songs.
You’ve been writing recently with some very credible and talented song writers. What if anything, do you think you have learned from this experience? – Id say I’ve learnt that a lot of it has got to do with the music coming from your soul rather than just making up a nice melody and putting lyrics to it which is something I have done in the past.
Since you’ve been in London have you learnt anything new about the music industry that you hadn’t known or considered before? – I’ve learnt that is cutthroat, I always knew it was cutthroat but its more than I thought and that there’s no guarantees with anything.
Are most of your song’s based on personal experience? – I try to yes, most of my songs have some sort of relationship with whats been going on in my life at the time.
Which of your songs are you most proud of and why? – Most proud of would be Salamander Street because it’s a bit like a Sunshine on Leith…..it just does something for me.
Who would your dream collaboration be with for writing / recording? – 0h… who’s a great songwriter…….somebody great……Eg White, I’ve written with him before, the guys a legend…and Jim Duguid.
You close your eyes a lot when singing, what goes through your head when you are performing? – I just see breasts ..haha no I’m joking….I’m just focused, feeling the song. It’s maybe a sense of insecurity aswell, if the gigs going badly then I’ll just close my eyes and get on with it and pretend I’m singing to myself.
If you could only listen to 3 songs for the rest of your life, what would they be? – Stairway to Heaven as it lasts 8 minutes long and won’t go off too quickly, Why does it always rain on me, what a tune that is, and emmm something nice and a bit different…..Hoppipolla by Sigur Ros, it’s a lovely sort of piano piece.
Would you strip off for one of your video’s if required? – Of course, without question, in fact I strip off most nights, don’t even need a video to do it lol
Does acting in videos come naturally or do you feel awkward? – You’re not really acting in video’s, its different, you’re just making yourself look cool rather than actually speaking words. If I had a script I’d probably find it more challenging but I think I’d quite like that. I’d like to act and do something funny, Id have loved to be in Dumb and Dumber, what a great film that was!
Where did your old band name Havana Fare come from? – It was an old Ramones song called Having an Affair and we just shortened it to have an affair hence Havana Fare lol Don’t search for us though as we weren’t very good, lovely guys in the band but we were really bad.
Is there one song you would refuse to sing if requested? – Yes it would be a Cliff Richard song, any Cliff Richard song….just no.
Last song played on your iPod / phone? – Machines by Biffy Clyro
Last album bought? – Tom O’Dell’s new one
Did you take guitar lessons as a kid and what tips can you give budding guitarists? – I took guitar lessons for about two weeks but its more about just persevering and doing it yourself.
Would you consider giving guitar lessons as a way to earn extra money? – No because I don’t think I’m that good lol
Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to pursue a career in music? – You really need to want to do it, music isn’t something that you can just get a job and make a living at 7 days a week. You need to have a passion and determination for it. You’re going to be skint for years and have to be dedicated. You need to love it and love being skint because of it.
What is your earliest memory? – I don’t know if its my earliest memory but I remember being really really young and my dad put stabilizers on my bike, I went up to the top of the road and came flying down straight into our neighbours new car, I remember just closing my eyes.
Is there anything that scares you about getting older? – Aw massively. I’m scared of what lies ahead of me….I’m scared of the unknown, I relish in it but I’m scared at the same time.
What was your best and worst subject at school? Were you a disruptive pupil? – Absolutely disruptive, set the fire alarm off many times, stupidly, and got into many school fights. Best subject would be PE and worse was maths.
You are a bit of a flirt, give us your best chat up line? – erm Do you come here often, here’s 10p to call your mum and tell her you won’t be coming home! ha-ha
Best present you ever got and who gave it to you? – Best present I ever got was a guitar from my dad, my first guitar 🙂
If you had to give up one of your senses which one would it be? Smell, sight, taste, touch, sound? – emmm probably my taste……….I’d rather see my food than taste it.
Have any fans made you feel uncomfortable by being too forward and if so how did you handle it? – ha-ha absolutely! How did I handle it? Just by being polite, if you’re polite to other people then they’ll be polite to you.
Do you have any phobias? – Heights get a little bit, I have dreams of vertigo, I remember getting part way up the Eiffel tower and thinking “its just too much for me”. Although I did jump off the Stratosphere in Las Vegas, free fall, so I can’t be that scared. I was really drunk at the time though lol
Is there anything you wish you were better at? – Football….and music, yeah I wish I was better at that.
If you were prime minster, what is the first law you would pass? – Cannabis, there’s nothing wrong with it, no ones died from it! It would solve a lot of problems and people would just chill out.
Do you have any hidden talents? Oh…hidden talents? I like to show off and do my talents……..but I can draw a little bit.
What is the most romantic thing you have done for someone? – I took my girlfriend to Paris.
Whats the most romantic thing someone has done for you? – I get romantic stuff done for me all the time, I get a foot massage etc at night, its nice, she’s too good to me as I wouldn’t touch my feet! haha
Can you tell us something shocking or interesting about yourself that we don’t already know? – I used to dive on stage with loads of famous people……I was on stage with REM, Kaiser Chiefs took me on their tour bus for a while and I sang on stage with them at a few gigs in Edinburgh….I had a doobie with the zutons..which was cool 🙂

Do you have a festive message for your fans (in particular your dear friends and super fans)? – Just have a great Christmas, do what you can for the kids and appreciate Christmas and the people around you and have a good one 🙂
